The madness of Denethor is not explained in the current cut. In fact, the whole palantir thing is dealt with somewhat haphazardly.

This is not a plot hole, but as John Harkness wrote in NOW, Jackson missed a major filmic moment by not showing the Black ships of the corsairs flying the flag of Gondor.

I'm sure true devotees will have many other quibbles. I thought some of the decisions were sound. For example, the whole thing with the mountain men guiding the Rohirrim -- not good in a film. Also, the scouring of the shire is not dramatically necessary. It's actually quite gratuitous.

In the film, the scene with Frodo captured by the orcs in Minas Morgul really seems quite otiose. I guess it serves to give them the orc outfits. But as it turns out, they don't meet any orcs later, because the director has changed that part of the story. So what we have is a little video-game type interlude where Sam fights his way to the highest level of a very high tower and rescues his true love, Frodo.
