Just saw some of the art work found in one of Saddam Hussein's safe houses. I like some fantasy art, but found this really groan-worthy:

There could be a lot to say about dictators and kitsch

I see sadism. Fair amount of phallogocentrism.

These guys must be feeling vaguely sick most of the time, don't you think?

I can see why epic-heroic forms and patterns would appeal to any dictator, and it's never impossible for artists in later stages of a tradition to tap into the genuinely epic-heroic.

But it is definitely hard. Most efforts to do that look like this -- phoney, cooked-up, more wishfully thinking than grand.

I mean, what can you say about them except: Saddam Hussein, this was your life -- you pathetic schmuck.

It's a little known fact that Saddam Hussein was an official playtester on Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition. Suddam Hussein: Dictator and Super-Geek.

*phew*

My cat's name is Kitsch. I was worried for a second that some babblers learned of my diabolical megalomaniacal plans for Latveria.

edited to add: with belated apologies to VVmB

Well unlike bad art, cats are an anethema to dictators. "J'aime les chats car il n'y a pas de chats policiers".

But what about Blofeld, lagatta, forever stroking his white cat? Perhaps he doesn't count because he's only a would-be dictator.

Oh, he's the arch-nemesis villain-type guy in some of the James Bond movies.

That's hilarious, scrabble. Where is he anyway? Do you think he's formed a combo with Qusay and Uday?

'lance, you know I'm hopeless about pop culture. I never watch Hollywood films.
