James Blunt's hit You're Beautiful has been deemed the most irritating song of all time, according to a global online poll by a U.K.-based firm.

The only Canadian entry on onepoll.com's list of the Top 10 most irritating songs was Céline Dion's My Heart Will Go On, which became a hit with the film Titanic more than 10 years earlier.

Read it here.

Wow, I didn't even know about this web poll, but somehow my choice for the most irritating song came out on top!

Anita Ward's 1979 Disco hit song "Ring My Bell"
irritated the hell out of me. Here's a taste of the engaging lyrics:

You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell

you can ring my bell, you can ring my bell
(ding, dong, ding, do-ong)
you can ring my bell, you can ring my bell
(ding, dong, ding, do-ong, ring it!)
you can ring my bell, anytime, anyway
(ring it, ring it, ring it, ring it oww!)
you can ring my bell, anytime, anyway
(ding, dong, ding, do-ong)

you can ring my bell, you can ring my bell
(ding, dong, ding, do-ong)
you can ring my bell, you can ring my bell
(ding, dong, ding, do-ong, ring it!)
you can ring my bell, anytime, anyway
(ring it, ring it, ring it, ring it oww!)
you can ring my bell, anytime, anyway
(ding, dong, ding, do-ong)

The poll reflects a category error. You're Beautiful is a fine song. It just got played too much -- precisely like the entire Eagles repretoire, also fine stuff but played way too much to remain tolerable.

"Most irritating" should apply right at first listen. Your need to leave should bloom at once, and only grow deeper and less controllable with repetition of the thing.

So Crazy Frog makes it easily.

Blunt's song irritated me the first time I heard it. Repetition only increased the irritation; it didn't cause it.

Well that's not a category error then. It's worse -- it's a disagreement.

But maybe not too serious. You have heard Crazy Frog...?

How could they leave out Terry Jacks' immortal
"SEASONS IN THE SUN"?

Not only irritating, but a complete defilement of "Le Moribond"(Song of the Dying Man)the Jacques Brel original it was derived from.

Every time Jacks gets to the line "Goodbye Papa, It's hard to die", I keep picturing Papa reaching for a gun and saying "keep singing that and I'll make it easier!".

Any nice song can become maudlin if overplayed.

The song that irritates me the most these days is the one that uses the hip-hopped sample from Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" : "take a look at my girlfriend, she's the only one I got..." etc. It not only completely rips that verse out of its intended (ironic) context, but it repeats it ad nauseum in the same song, as if that phrasing has some kind of contemporary social significance. In fact, I believe the contemporary version makes the original version all the more ironic, stupidly without even knowing it.

I do have to give credit to James Blunt for saying, in an interview, that he finds "You're Beautiful" as annoying as everyone else does. Blunt also said he actually had them stop selling it in the UK, as an act of aesthetic compassion I presume.

The smalltown restaurant where we used to hangout had a juke box in the 1980's. I think we set a record for consecutive plays of "Panama", AC/DC "TNT" and "Thunderstruck" I think it's my left eyelid that twitches rapidly, and there's this strange craving for a coca cola, french fries and gravy whenever I hear those old tunes now. tnt oi!, oi!, OI!
