Well, I have recently discovered a new favorite show, on PBS. It’s a “kids’ program” based out of The Emerald Isle, named “Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks”. I came across it while I was house-sitting, and was charmed beyond measure.

It is one of those type of kids’ programs/stories that the Brits and/or Irish seem to excell at — entertaining for kids and adults alike, amusing and warm without being cloying and “syrup-y”, making a point without being patronizing and “preachy”, and generally being gol-dang funny. The cast of characters delighted me, although I still don’t have all their names straightened out. My favorite is the little Spanish bull, who punctuates his conversations with the exclamation “Jenny Mac!” whenever he is pleased, surprised or frightened. As anyone who knows their Irish history will quickly recall, when the Spanish Armada was routed, some of their ships limped as far west as Ireland, where they sought refuge. Somehow — I’m not certain about the character’s history yet — the little bull’s forebearers were stranded on Irish soil along with the sailors, which is how he comes to be there. (Another hoot is Mel Brooks’ voice as the head sheep, imported from Brooklyn — of all places!)

Part of what captivated me was the sheer Irishness of it all, such as the droll humour and the sly digs that give kids some credit for intelligence and applies the wit with an artist’s deft touch of the brush, rather than slathering it about with a paint roller. And *most* charming of all was the cheerful Irish “lilt” in all the characters’ speech (with the glaring exception of the sheep from Brooklyn).

I have no idea if this show is “old hat” to babblers with kids or not (and I’m not ashamed to admit that I still love cartoons and kids’ shows that are done in an intelligent manner.) If anyone out there with kids (or even those who just love a good program) is interested, you can check out the broadcast times in your area by goingf to: http://pbskids.org/jakers/ (I’m suspecting that skdadl will enjoy this show immensely, for one!)

I hope some of you enjoy this half as much as I do!
