As some may be aware, the original Star Trek series is being digitally remastered, with the addition of more modern special effects. This is causing some consternation among purists (discussed here).

More here with some before and after pictures.

Normally, I'm the first guy to condemn tampering with the classics. I think they should have a special circle of hell for those who colourize black and white films. But this I think is kind of cool.

Wow, they've really gone all out! Of course, part of the fun of the original series is the really bad special effects. It's so much fun to watch it because of that.

But I think the remastered one will be neat too, because at this point, the old special effects are almost a distraction, we've advanced so far beyond them now. It will be easier to get engrossed in the stories when you're not giggling over the clock that looks like a 1960's alarm clock, with the turning numbers.

I stopped watching ST when it got really sophisicated, because it lost its former kitsch appeal. Actually, as far as I'm concerned, when ST got more sophisicated, it became less believable. I love it when I can find reruns of the original series.

I think I might be the only person alive who enjoyed the tenth movie, star trek nemesis.

Nemesis was all sorts of weak, dude! Praetor Shin'zon was such a poorly played character. And, come on, there is no way that the Tal'Shiar would've let a coup plot go that far. It makes no sense!

But what is awful are the ideas for Star Trek 11. Matt Damon as Kirk, Ben Affleck as Spock, although I think I can handle Phillip Seymour Hoffman as McCoy. Rumours, but frightening. Mind you, I still wish that Spider-Man could have been able to cast Roy Orbison as Doctor Octopus. The resemblence to what I've seen as Doc Oc and Roy Orbison is unbelievably close.

But this looks kind of cool. I hated the Star Wars abominations with all their extra special effects. But this definitely has some legs that I can respect. Balance of Terror is out for download. But, man, it will be killer to see Squire of Gothos.

I am Papal Bull of the highest circle of nerddom!

Did anyone download and watch the new finnish star treck movie?
I got impulse speed internet so I never got round to it.
It was made by fans. A full blown star treck movie with subtitles!
The trailers were pretty neat.
I bet it is still out there too.

Wow, I had actually forgotten about Nemisis. I had to ask my son about it and he reminded me about leaving the theater with him grumbling about wanting my money back. For those that havn't seen it, it's based on the premise that in the Romulan home system there's a dark planet inhabited by German post expressionist film rejects with attitude. All you need to know. Oh yeah, their mayor or whatever is Max Schreck.

Matt Damon as a young Kirk; hmmm, I can see a problem casting Kirk with someone who can actually act, but it might explore a new direction for the character.

Latest on Spock that I've heard is Zachary Quinto, which I could see.

While I've always pictured McCoy is a skinny little guy, Phillip Seymore Hoffman would be great.
