Elton John has written four pieces for Lestat on days off from his tour with Billy Joel. "I saw Bernie's lyrics and I said this can't be a rock opera. This has to be classically done and with organic instruments. These are complicated, complex songs. It's more Les Miserables than Irving Berlin.

OH my.

I can't wait to see the rewritten lyrics for Candle in the Wind as applied to The Queen of the Damned. It should make for a great show!

It seems to me
You lived your death
like a bat upon the winds...

You know, you could, sort of, pull off The Vampire Lestat as a musical... Anne Rice frames it that way in the novel, with Lestat starting a rock band, the concert, etc. However, the idea that it has to be all "organic" is contrary to the original work. I also think Elton John should be kept far, far, FAR away from it...

And Bernie Taupin, who's responsible for many if not most of Mr. Dwight's "lyrics" (he said, shuddering involuntarily).

On the other hand, I've never succeeded in finishing an Anne Rice novel, finding them about as annoying as the movie version of "Interview with the Vampire." So maybe this is a match made in heaven.
