She was one of the greatest actors of the last century -- and I say that without ever having seen her greatest performances, which were on stage.

But she made the crossover to film and TV effortlessly -- my very favourite of her movies is still I Know Where I'm Going, but there were so many, for so long: Pygmalion, Major Barbara, Murder on the Orient Express, many classic TV series.

She was also known as a solid socialist, an all-round no-nonsense strong and decent woman.
