I'm not much of an expert, especially when it comes to stats and all that, but a friend at my former job is part of a football pool and I was having fun watching her progress and thought it might be fun to have one on babble for hockey.

So...how do you run one of these things anyhow? Time for someone else to take over. I'll just participate.

Try using the services of www.poolexpert.com. There's a small fee, but the updates and tracking are done automatically.

I've used www.officepools.com for the UofS law pool 3 years running. It too has a low fee and includes daily updates and injury updates.

I belong to a yahoo one right now that is free and does the drafting for you. And has links to whose injured, etc.

We are using the yahoo one for an English premier league too.

I would recommend officepools.com as well. I've participated in at least three pools using this site and it is always well maintained and affordable.

The BBC news web site has a cool English Premier Leauge "fantasy leauge" that is free and has very cool prizes. No that I would be able to collect most of them (can't see myself flying over on the weekend to catch Blackburn at Arsenal), but it's fun nonetheless.

But hockey? Football? Rah rah rah.

Dear skdadl, you forget something: baseball is boooooring. Without the sepia-tinged nostalgia that is constantly trotted out with every discussion of baseball, people would actually see how frightfully dull a sport it is.

I remember sitting near the left field corner at the Dome and watching Devon White bat two down the line (first one was foul, second was a double). That ball just screamed. It's no dull game to me.

black dog, my buddy, how could you?

I mean, I confess, the biz part of baseball has now become so utterly disgusting that even I can't stand to follow the Jays too closely any more. I refuse to enter the Dome ever again. (You can't imagine how mean they are to smokers there. )

But the game that ends in the top of the ninth with a throw to home plate (Jesse Barfied preferred) ... Tell me that that ever happens in hockey or football.

Baseball, y'know, it's nice. It's slow. Get too distracted by the slowness, though, and you won't be able to react when suddenly something happens.

It's a discipline. You can talk. You can knit. You can cook. You can go to bed and drift off with the radio on when they're on the west coast. You can do just about anything at the same time.

But you gotta have the eddicated ear -- you gotta be paying attention to the stats, and knowing when a move might be made, a move that might matter ... And sometimes, you're on your knees and banging the floor and saying We won we won we won ... and other times you're biting the mantlepiece (I did that once when Dave Stieb dropped the return) and swearing They don't deserve to win!

Oh, but it has been ruined. Love baseball; hate capitalism. Hey! I found a new slogan!

Oh, don't get me wrong, skdadl: I don't hate baseball. I find the strategizing and gamesmanship to be fascinating. it's just that the action itself is nearly non-existent. Football, on the other hand, has the strategy and the action.

Autopick will divide the players randomly to each team, then you can make trades.

In my other league I ended up with Naslund, Hossa, Modano, Lindros, Roenick, Cechmanek and and few lesser players. It works out pretty well.

I think we should start some pools about hockey pools. A recursion:

Let x = hockey

1. Start a pool y about x.
2. Perform step 1 with y as the next x.

It doesn't, of course, terminate.

Here's the deal: the league draftes automatically based on a set of pre-rankings. You can change the rankings if you want, or just leave your team to the hand of fate.

I'll be setting the league to draft on Wednesday, so have your team set and ready to go by then.

10 teams: yay! There's still room for more (skadadl: why don't you start your own team: it's easy as pie)

Okay hockey pool members. The league has been drafted and y'all better be ready to get thumped.

Also take note that I've upped the numbe rof players each team can carry from 16 to 21, as there are still lots of quality players available and it makes thing more interesting.

Organised sport is definitely a major facet of popular culture. (Remember, this forum started out as "pop culture" until us highbrows wanted a place to discuss things that were anything but). Not just the sport itself but all the rituals surrounding it. The only other option would be to see hockey as a religion - in Québec we talk of "La Sainte Flanelle" - and put it in body and soul.

Here are a couple of important books on the social history of sport in Canada:

Canada Learns to Play: The Emergence of Organized Sport, 1807-1914, by Alan Metcalfe; published in Toronto by McClelland and Stewart in 1987.

Sports and Games in Canadian Life: 1700 to the Present, by Nancy Howell and Max L. Howell; published in Toronto by Macmillan of Canada in 1969.

I know, I know. People are often flabbergasted to find out that I was born and raised in Edmonchuck when they here me talk about hockey.

I just can't romanticize a sport best characterized by the smackcrunching sound of two men slamming eachother into the wall on purpose.

Besides which, I've never really been able to get into it cuz I've got this pavlovian sleep response to the sound of the puck dropping. Old habits die hard...

OK, now I'm confused. Apparently between when I wrote this and the next time I logged in, my glorious victory had been converted into a 5-1 defeat.

RankTeam NameW-L-TWin %PTS
1 Geoducks41-13-16 .700 98
2 the doozenators 35-18-17 .621 87
3 Tackaberry 32-22-16 .571 80
4 Ukrainian Sensation 32-23-15 .564 79
5 Black Dog Barflies 31-26-13 .536 75
6 Scouts Scrappers 29-28-13 .507 71
7 ahhhpuckits 28-31-11 .479 67
8 BWAGA Bombers 22-34-14 .414 58
9 Archimedean Screws 15-39-16 .329 46
10 Celtic Crushers 12-43-15 .279 39

Yes indeed...that is me, still at the bottom of the table. I actually *didn't lose* for the first time this week - after a run of successive overall defeats, the Black Dog Barflies won 4, as did I. So it's a draw..and good for something. Funny enough I'm doing really well in a public league for the NBA, but still being hammered at hockey.

Michelle...aahhfukit...Scout....anybody else...any comments on your progress to date?

i think i need to make a few changes, mostly in the sucking-ass department... well, at least the ahhhpuckits aren't in last place. i feel a mid season surge coming on though.

one thing that has hurt my team a couple of times was forgetting to bench suspended players (tkachuk) or switch goalies to get my benchwarmer in a game he was playing.

I haven't been doing much with my team because I really don't understand how the thing works. I was more kind of hoping for the type of pool where you bet on the outcome of REAL games. But I will try to pay more attention to this. Thanks for bumping it!

Okay, I'm kind of getting it. So I benched a few and put a few new ones out. I'm thinking that probably going with an injured and out-for-the-season goalie was probably not doing me a lot of good. Also benched a couple of other players who appeared not to be performing well.

So, like, go BWAGA Bombers go.

I'm *ahem* not in first place anymore.

But, rabble dynamo's two goalies played each other last night. Score 0 to 0. Counts for two shutouts and moved me up two places.

My team is structured around Alfredsson, Hossa and Bonk and the Sens aren't doing so well right now.

I can't figure out why I suck so badly. I can't see to move up at all. Maybe it's because I really don't get this match up thing. That and sometimes I just have too many players playing on a given night so I have to bench somebody!

In my other yahoo hockey pool I am thrashing them. I am way ahead of all the boys.

So, having neglected to check my pool lately, I didn't realize I had two players in my line up on the IR. 'cause I was, you know, drunk. So anyway, error rectified, Yzerman has been added, let the winning begin!

I think the way it works is like this. Starting on a Monday morning, your players get stats for the games you play in. Goals, assists etc - as listed in the "match up" page. You can chop and change players during the week - but if you take off X and replace with Y, you keep X's stats until that date and get Y's from then onwards. Players on the bench or IL don't count while they're there.

The final score comes on Sunday night - you win a game for every stat category you win in (i.e. if I accumulate 7 goals and your players get 8, you win one game). So the final score is something like 4-3 or whatever. The score goes up during the week every day, but it doesn't mean anything till the end. I.e. maybe today the score between two teams is 7-1 but as more stats are added up it may change.

So I understand the rules...but I'm still coming last ;-)

Oi, Michelle, you just picked up pretty much a full new team. How are you going to deal with all those fragile egos?

(Word to the wise: we are able to pick up free agents as long as we keep our team under a certain limit - 20 or something, isn't it? Anyway, Michelle just got NINE new players...

Was it only nine new players? Wow. I thought I spent about an hour picking people out. I even got a couple of new players and then dumped the brand new ones for other new players.

I don't know what the heck I'm doing though. I don't know what stats to look at to make the best choices. When you click on the player's name, their stats pop up in another window. The thing that I was going by is that bar chart - the person with the largest "red" bar got onto my team. That's basically all I could figure out. Hopefully I'm using a useful stat there.

Is that how you figure out who the best players are?

There were several people on my team that I just HAD to replace. I mean, there was one guy who was injured and out for the season that I finally benched last week, but I traded him last night. There were a few others who were (according to that bar chart) performing way below league average. Can't be having that!

Wish I'd caught onto this thing sooner. If I've caught on.

Looks like quite a diverse league there, between your nod to cold war hockey (Spartak) and the third place New York Cameltoe, not to mention the N4cer. Brains over brawn? Irony over injury?

I didn't notice that name before, and had never even heard of "camel toe" until about a week ago. I had to google it to make sure I got it right.

WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH HOCKEY?

Anyway, I used "Spartak" because we used to call my old team "the Russians" because we had more skill than anyone, never fought, never lost and never showed emotion by such antics as cheering after scoring goals.

Whaddya know? I happened to find a picture of our rink on the web.

Where's Rabble Dynamo's Sam Pollock these days?

Does anyone understand how the standings are calculated?

I was in first with 90.5 points, made some changes, and ended up in third, with 88 popints.

I undid a change and am now back in first, with 90 points, while a couple of other teams that had 90.5 points are now in the 80s.

What gives?

al-qa'bong, you are playing a rotisserie league, so your points are compiled based on order of finish per scoring category. since there are 12 teams, 1st place gets 12 points, 12th place 1 point, and each category is cumulative for the season, based on your starting lineup. you can find all the rules here.

If you understand it, I'm happy. I still don't get it.

I thought I was doing well, until I checked the overall stats, where I rank 13298.

babble hockey pool playoffs are finished, and the results are:

champion - geoducks
2nd place - ahhhpuckits
3rd place - scouts scrappers
4th place - black dog barflies
5th place - celtic crushers
6th place - bwaga bombers
7th place - the doozenators
8th place - tackaberry
9th place - ukrainian sensation
10th place - archimedian screws

and in the tradition of sportmanship, as the runner up i must congratulate the league champion geoducks (chicken puppet) on a great season and playoff. as well, i must take this time to remind him that tradition also holds that the winner buys the beer for everyone after a friendly, but nonetheless hardly fought, contest such as this.
