I find it offensive but not particularly surprising. Right-wing newspaper editors have long made the comics page a harbour for propaganda like this. Johnny Hart's strips, for example, have mocked Jews and called for their conversion to christianity.

PS besides the '50's social view, what's with the '70's hair on these people? Someone go over to this hack artist's cave and cut him a window!

It reads like Rex Morgan, M.D. crossed with Seventh Heaven. B-freakin'-zarre, but at the same time... not, somehow.

It seems that the artist is (badly) tracing from old John Romita, Sr. Spider-Man comics.

I miss Mary Worth!! It took about three weeks to have lunch in that comic. Closest thing to it these days is Rex Morgan, MD

I bet they had their children before Mimi was 30 and her ovaries were dried up, causing her to be a useless burden on society.....

Sorry. I've been watching too much American TV lately.

Ummmm. to quote the great Les Nessman ...

"I know I'm an idiot and everything ..." but ...

What's so offensive about that?

Maybe abortion ISN'T ALWAYS the best choice.
Is that heresy? Then I don't wanna be "pious."

BTW, if you thought that was Chick tract, you've never seen a Chick tract.

Fair comment. Check out this abortion (if you dare). Love is hate.

so, majorvictory, with more right-wing theological republicans in congress than ever, your cartoon says that: "the bible is a joke and the fear of god is gone". i disagree. if anything, the "common sense" that is shown in the gil thorpe cartoon is on the rise. just look at bush's references to god in every speech and restrictions year-after-year on roe v. wade. the other freaky quote: "don't tell me about your great nation and your laws" -- so all the laws of the U.S. should be subject to the law of God, or only abortion?

The thing from the Chicago tribune- I don't find it offensive really because there are people out there who act like the characters do. And offering to take in a pregnant teenager and help her raise a child is a very honorable thing to do.

The other cartoon however, is ridiculous. It again casts Jesus as a vengeful authoritarian judge who will punish those who sin. I'm sorry but the Jesus I know forgives sin and is our savior nad our friend. These "chick tracts" show instead this vengeful Jesus. And another things is this Jesus = God stuff... have these people not heard of the trinity? How can Jesus be God if they are supposed to be two seperate entities (Father, and Son).

I am personally against abortion, but I don't tell pro-choice people that they are going to hell. This kind of propaganda only hurts the pro-life movement.

I've read many a Jack Chick tract, so bollocks to your assumption.

It all makes perfect sense! Of course she's a harlot, she got pregnant outside of wedlock! That means she must have *gasp* had sex outside of the official sanction of the Holy Trio. And it's not like she's a guy, to whom the rules don't apply. She's a woman! Where'd I put that Scarlet 'A' stamp, anyways?

Thanks for sharing this cartoon, Audra, I think.

(I've never been more thankful that I don't have a online account with the Chicago Tribune...I remain blissfully ignorant of the other storylines in this 50's morality tale.)
