It's a movie title.

Proof that Torontonians are human

quote:
To illustrate how cold and alienated Torontonians can be, documentary filmmaker Albert Nerenberg and his crew last summer boarded a Yonge St. subway train.

The problem was: everybody turned out to be warm and friendly.

"All these people ran up to us and said, `What are you doing?' And when we told them, they said, `Oh, would you like me to act really alienated?'"

Nerenberg declined but tried elsewhere.

He directed his lead actor, Rob Spence, to walk around with a paper bag over his head during the Nuit Blanche arts festival last September, pretending he was ashamed to be a Torontonian.

Spontaneously, passers-by came up and hugged him.

"The clearest, most undeniable proof that Torontonians are human, too," Nerenberg says. "It was quite a magical experience."

The hugging scene shows up in Nerenberg's Let's All Hate Toronto, to be screened twice at this year's Hot Docs festival, which starts Thursday.

I don't know if the results would change (I doubt it...all the Torontonians I've ever met are nice), but I suspect a hidden camera is the way to go with this sort of 'study'.

You know what Stompin' Tom Connors said about Toronto? He said, "Toronto is a mighty fine town. They never turn a Maple Leaf upside-down."
And you know something? He's right!
