Hey all,

For a term project I'm trying to find some WAY back issues of Adbusters and This Magazine.

My U Library is no help -- there's some weird new database with an even more sucky interface than the previous ones.

This Magazine did a feature article, perhaps up to seven (or even 10)? years ago, on Reclaim the Streets parties. I think it was an issue talking about various versions of left activism that also considered "localism" generally. It was a really good article and it would be great to get my hands on.

The second thing I'm looking for is a photo from what I BELIEVE to have been in Adbusters. I also BELIEVE the photo is from the Prague IMF protest in 2000. It's a woman in a fairy costume protesting in the "Pink Bloc", and she's standing behind a row of cops with her feather-duster on one of the cops' butts and laughing her ass off.

(If anyone's curious my presentation is for a Cultural Studies class and I involve Althusser's notions of hailing and interpellation - he uses cops saying "hey you!" as an example for how ideology is made 'material'. But I also want to blow up the pink bloc photo for my room!)

Cheers,

Oxygen Smith

I find it very hard to believe that your university wouldn't have Adbusters or This magazine. Are they re-cataloguing? If not, and the problem is that you're having trouble understanding the database, just ask the reference librarian for help. In my experience, they're more than happy to help track down old magazines and such.

Also, you could try writing to either of the magazines. Both probably still sell back-issues, and someone there may be able to help you identify the right issue.

Lastly, if there's any left-wing bookstores or magazine stores, they might have backissues. What about alternative libraries in Edmonton?

I have a large stack of This Magazine, from 1986 to today. My stack of Adbusters is much much smaller (because it started to suck), but I probably have the issue you have in mind. That said, without a narrower window, I can't really commit to looking through either stack for you.

Hey folks:

I have libraries of these issues in my own collection, too, just not the issues I'm looking for, and I usually have a good librarian's memory about where I've seen stuff.

It's not as if my library doesn't have them either to a point, they just a) don't go back as far as I'd like them to & b) obviously, I'm trying to save time & c) there might be people out there who just say "wait a minnit! I've seen that!"

Good call, writing the magazines themselves. I've just done that.

Thanks, Oxygen
