I saw the local singer/songwriter thread, and I felt the need to make this one. What are your favorite local bands, why do you feel so passionate about them, and do you think they'll garner a wider audience? Post some mp3 links, if you'd like.

Edmonton has a robust, vibrant, and overlooked (although we don't mind!) music scene. Two of my favorite local bands are:

The Wolfnote. Anyone who's into post-hardcore or experimental noise would dig these guys. Their bio compares them both to post-hardcore acts like the brilliant Nation of Ulysses and Drive Like Jehu and early new-wavers like the B-52s. They've got a fantastic sound that's both angular and often melodic. Good stuff all around.

The Operators *780*. I've listened to a lot of North American ska/reggae, and I can confidently tell you that these guys are among the best in their genre. They've got a fantastic sound that fuses punky reggae, ska and dub. Their new album looks like it'll swerve to even punkier sounds (in the vocals, especially), while still giving great organ-drenched modern interpretations of traditional Jamaican music. I love these guys beyond words.

I should also mention that the Wolfnote's new album is released on the mighty indie label, Sonic Unyon, so they'll definitely get wider exposure.
