Oh...
Degrassi brings back so many memories...even stranger is the reaction I have when I cross paths with Degrassi cast members...imagine seeing Snake and Wheels at a pub playing pool and eating natchos? Strangely enough, "they look exactly like they do on TV!" I read somewhere that "no comment" was provided when asked if "Joey J" was planning on sporting his infamous hat.

I grew up with 2 channels, both CBC affiliates. So naturally, I will be watching the new Degrassi (I have TV again...woo hoo!). I read somewhere that it revolves around Spike's daughter (who is now thirteen...jeezus I feel old).

I've been following the development of the new Degrassi show fairly closely. I think it's gonna suck hard.

- It's being shot on video, not film.

- It's being shot on a soundstage in an industrial park north of Toronto, instead of being shot in a real neighbourhood and school.

- They're using experienced actors instead of "real" kids.

- They're using celebrity cameos to raise the profile of the show. Kevin Smith was supposed to be in the pilot episode as Caitlin's boyfriend, but his schedule wouldn't allow it. They're using Don McKellar instead.

Basically, every decision they've made about the show is contrary to what was so great about the original. The original seemed "real", because of how low-budget and gritty it was. The new show sounds like it'll be too "over-produced". It reminds me of that terrible show from a long time ago called Fifteen. Anybody remember that show?

The official website is www.degrassi.tv. The producers of the show are threatening to sue the guy who owns www.degrassi.ca and www.degrassi.com.

I have heard the same awful rumours M'boy.

I watched.. Last years? Season premier of Jonovision on CBC last night. Snake and Joey were on there.... unfortunately, I don't think many of the kids in the crowd knew who they were.... they didn't get tonnes of references to the old show.

Most memorable Degrassi moments anyone?

Probably the new show will not be up to the old, but don't get too carried away by the rhetoric of "non-professional actors". The original DeGrassi was a non-union shop. Maybe that's why none of the kids get any residuals, even though it is sold again and again, all over the world.

Anyway, what's the difference between a professional and non-professional 13 year old actor? We're not talking superstars here.

i'm looking forward to the new show in that it wil give me SOMETHING relative to the old Degrassi cuz Spike's kid will be on it..stuff like that. my roomie and i were recently discussing this very topic..and it's incredible really, how influential and meaningful Degrassi was to a generation of Canadian youth. personally i like Liz and Spike the best..they were some slick chics! oh yeah....
i thought Snake was a sweetie...Caitlyn (sp?) was far too annoying..as were many of the women on that show in retrospect. but, oh well, i will forever be indebted to that show. it exposed me to many social issues that other 'Hollywood' dramas wouldn't go near. Degrassi really was ahead of its time. yaaaay Degrassi!!

It wasn't just influencial in Canada. The show was sold all over the world, and was very popular on PBS. It was actually required viewing in a lot of US schools.

dude...sorry, but growing up in a country that has always been considered sidekick to the US..it's nice to know that SOME things Canadian aren't neccessarily bad or 'second rate'. i know there is a HUGE underground Degrassi following in the US...it's just kinda ironic dontchya think?

yeah, i fully know that this new degrassi won't be anywhere near the original, but i'm betting the writing will be just as cheesy... case in point, a colleague's sister was one of the writers and used some really bad email forwards for dialogue... like "get off my planet" etc.
yikes!
