Canadian Jewish News

That CJC still has this in its sights sends a great message to the next generation about persistance and morality.

That is good news Ohara. Thanks for posting this. There were so many great pieces stolen it is nice to see someone is trying to get these pieces back.

This is good news, and good for the CJC. I've been hearing that there has been more progress on this internationally, but it's too bad it's taken so long.

Why does the CJC want the Nazi's to get their looted art back?

I'm pretty sure that the CJC wants the Nazis to give back the art they, the Nazi's, looted from the people they so easily killed.

The Nazis are gone. It must be friends of the Nazis who were holding the loot for safe keeping.

Who knew their purchases and gifts weren't legit after all these years ?. I think we've got the start of a Dave Letterman top ten reasons list.

It wouldn't be just Nazi supporters who have these artworks in their possession. Who knows how many of these artpieces changed hands over the years? There could be all kinds of people and institutions that purchased the art in good faith but still could be left holding the bag as they are forced to return them to their original owners. There could be a lot of very rich lawyers by the time all this is settled.

Ya, I can see it all now. "Honestly, I had no idea these Jewish scrolls and ritual objects dating from the 14th century were stolen. I was using them as bookends until you pointed me to this registry of stolen artworks." I think I tried something similar with a cop after being caught speeding.

I agree. If a gallery wants to buy something it is their responsibility to check it out first. eg "the Scream" even I know that was stolen, and art experts at museums must have more knowledge than that!

It is:

quote:
The portrait was snapped up not by one of the collectors of Nazi memorabilia who were bidding by phone but by a local man. The painting takes pride of place in the home the man shares with his mother in Lostwithiel. Jefferys' dalliance with Hitler's art would had ended there had the price - £5,200 - not attracted the attention of an elderly woman in Belgium who had had a collection of Hitler paintings passed down to her. She contacted Jefferys and asked it to sell 21 of her pictures. Jefferys faced a double dilemma - were the paintings genuine? And was it morally right for it to sell them?

Okay, let it go, ohara. The point was to put a stop to it, and it's stopped now. Move forward with your life! Discover new things! Be happy!
