So I'm listening to As It Happens, which is playing a song by Garrison Keillor, from last Saturday's "Prairie Home Companion."

It's about that nightclub fire in Rhode Island a couple of weeks back, and it's quite likely the most distasteful piece of music I've ever heard.

It's done as a weepy-type country ballad in 3/4 time, Hammond organ, the whole bit -- the sort of song whose structure, these days, is practically a byword for comedy or satire. Trouble is the subject, which gives rise to lyrics like

quote:
All the beautiful daughters
and the handsome mill hands
inside of five minutes
they all died at the dance

etc. & so forth. If he was trying for pathos, he got bathos.

Anyway, my respect for Keillor has just taken a precipitous dive. I can't imagine what, if anything, he was thinking.

You can listen to it here, if you're so inclined.
