Joey Ramone died from cancer recently, and I just heard that bassist Dee Dee Ramone just died at the age of 49-50.

Damn.

Maybe the remaining Ramones and the remaining Beatles could reunite...

Stranger things have been mooted. I once heard that when Jim Morrison died, someone had the idea of asking Iggy Stooge (as he then was) to take over from him.

My only reaction to this was "Phew! That was a close one!" Though I don't know how close it was.

It's possible he could have transmogrified the Doors into a decent band. But I'm just as happy he never tried.

I saw the Ramones 8 times over the years, from 78 to 85. More than any other band. At one memorable concert at the Masonic Temple, I caught one of Dee Dee's picks, flung non-chalantly into the crowd at the end of the show. It was an extra heavy Gibson triangular pick, with "The Ramones" embossed on it. A couple of years later I moved from guitar to bass guitar, and I used that pick for the first three years I played bass. Finally it broke, long after the embossing had worn away, and I was forced to look for a replacement. I've tried to use other shapes of picks, but I am stuck with the style that Dee Dee introduced me to.

Gabba Gabba Hey!

a good friend of mine broke 3 ribs at a Ramones Concert. She speaks of that day with reverence....
I never saw them live. I just crank up the CD and jump around my living room once in a while.

I saw them in Victoria, in 1990 -- together with Debbie Harry and the Tom Tom Club with Jerry Harrison, i.e. 3/4 of Talking Heads (closest I ever got to seeing them). It was billed as the "Escape from New York" tour -- very strange triple bill, indeed.

I spent a couple of summers here in Ottawa while I was in university....they used to show Stop Making Sense the last Friday of every month at the old Towne Cinema. About the 3rd song into the flick, folks would begin to go up front to dance. Not quite the same as being at a concert, but very fun nevertheless!

(and no broken ribs that I know about)

ronb, you've stopped making sense.

Scratch that -- you're making perfect sense to me.

The "old" Towne cinema -- you mean, it's gone?

Sniff. Living up the road in Arnprior, I went to some fun movies there. Saw Rocky Horror, for example, for the second time.

I never got to see the Ramones live, but for a while my wardrobe was based on their album covers.

"Slugs and snails are after me
DDT makes me happy
Now I guess I'll have to tell 'em
That I've got no cerebellum
Gonna get my PhD
I'm a teenage lobotomy"

Poetry...pure poetry.

Their It's Alive is the best live rock album around.

Yeah, I saw the Ramones many times, and they were great. Last year I was shocked to hear Joey died, and now Dee Dee. Actually he left like 15 years ago, but he wrote a lot of the great songs.

Probably my favorite these days is "Commando". It's Alive is a fantastic live album. "This song is called Rockaway Baaaayyyycchhhh - one two three four!!!!"
