CBC Radio is currently running a contest of sorts in which famous Canadian music people pick what they believe are the 50 most important tunes of the 20th century.

I found that I like Jeff Healey's picks (although I'd have chosen other tunes), and also agree with his lack of enthusiasm about Billie Holiday.

I found one of the panellists very annoying. She kept disagreeing with the others' choices. One morning I heard "Over the Rainbow" and just knew she had chosen that song for the list - sure enough.

I don't think much of the 40s tunes that were picked. The panellists seem to think that a song's contribution to rock and roll is important.

I don't know if I'd even bother trying to come up with such a list, for as George Bernard Shaw says, "the habit of placing works of art in competition with one another, and wrangling as to which is the best, is the habit of the sportsman, not of the enlightened judge of art".

Such lists often serve as good samplers for the new aficionado, though.
