Ever wonder what an "open-source" typeface would look like?

quote:
Kevan Davis, a British Web developer, created grids of pixels, 20 by 20 in size, one for each letter of the alphabet. He randomly dispersed black-and-white pixels in each. Then he pu0t them online and let people vote on whether a particular pixel should be white or black. As thousands of people voted on each one, letters emerged, forming a democratic consensus of what the alphabet should look like.

Check it out, fontheads!

This experiment looks kind of cool at first. But what about the fact that people will choose "black" or "white" according to letter shapes that we think are "correct", based on conventional boundaries of letters. Then, there are the renegades who will choose "black" or "white" to deliberately thwart this same convention.

The process of developing a new font is far more complex than this, I think. Just my humble opinion. As a "font-head". Which does not mean that my head is a fountain.

I think that an experiment like this can't fail. Whatever the result, the developer can always say "that's what we collectively wished for", and there'll always be some information to be found in our choice.

But I agree that a process like this is never going to result in Garamond Italic.

There are lots of open-source typefaces. Well, at least, there's the Knuth's Computer Modern family for metafont. Tonnes of scientific documents are published in it.
