I was watching the Britney Spears video "Stronger" one day and noticed in the scene with the twirling chair she does not make much of jump onto it. The filming seems doctored and a close look reveals she can only jump up a few inches. I thought, what a poor leap.

So I saw if I could jump onto my kitchen chair, which is about 20 inches high and I could fairly easily hop onto it with my socks on. You see, it makes me think, Britney Spears, while a very energtic and sensual dancer, has little explosive leaping ability.

Explosiveness is a key element in sport. A sudden shot, block, flip, toss, pass, or jump no one expects to see at a given moment. Explosiveness and unpredictability are not what you expect from dancers who follow a choreographed routine with generally no variation from start to finish.

While it will unfortunately occur that ballroom dancing will become an Olympic "sport" a few years hence, I think this is a mistake. Dancers say they exert a great deal of energy in their "sport", but so do security guards and mailmen as they walk miles a day.

It would make an amazing exhibition "sport" though!
