I've really taken to Jian Ghomeshi's National Playlist; a panel submits songs, judges songs, and then the public votes on which songs get to stay in the top ten (the bottom four get dropped each week).

National Playlist

I know babblers will be pleased Neil Young's 'Heart of Gold' should be at the top of the Playlist Hall of Fame when it's finally retired in a month or two, but I was wondering what you think of the show. Does it add to our collective obsession with judging and ranking? And how did 'Golddigger' get on the list? Is there something to the song that I'm just not understanding?

quote:
18 years, 18 years
She got one of yo kids got you for 18 years
I know somebody payin child support for one of his kids
His baby momma's car's crib is bigger than his

I enjoy TNP. I make a point of listening to it on days when I am not in class.

The problem with the playlist is that we only get to vote on the songs that Jian and the panel of so called experts pick, some of which are pretty bad . Some of the panelists are picking songs that have a criteria that makes sense to them but has nothing to do with music . The song goldigger is a good example with a wicked Ray Charles sample it is very catchy but as you listen to it you realize the lyrics are obnoxious and the only thing it has going for it is the Ray sample. I believe CBC listeners have better taste than this so I think of the 4 new songs added each week 2 should be pitched & picked by the listeners . However this is not likly to happen as the whole thing has an elitist vibe to it .

It's been cancelled? What were Jully's coments?

I listen to CBC daily and latly I switch to the local FM station as soon as I hear TNP theme song, the idea was cute but a daily 30 min segment is a bit much......maybe they could cut back to an hour show on Friday afternoon.

And how did 'Golddigger' get on the list? Is there something to the song that I'm just not understanding?

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18 years, 18 years
She got one of yo kids got you for 18 years
I know somebody payin child support for one of his kids
His baby momma's car's crib is bigger than his

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think the whole verse (if you read it all) refers to a golddigging wife who convinced his husband that they had a kid, and thus was allowed to freeload of him for 18 years, at the end of which he finds out the kid wasn't his.

Kanye West is my #1B favorite hip-hop artist.

*ahem*

Now I ain't sayin' she's a golddigger, but she ain't messin' with no broke n- .... I don't know how the debate over white people using that word turned out on rabble.

Now, that's not the whole story in the song.

quote:
From what I heard she got a baby by Busta
My best friend say she use to fuck wit Usher
I dont care what none of ya'll say I still love her

Also:

quote:
He gone make it into a Benz out of that Datsun
He got that ambition baby look in his eyes
This week he moppin floorz next week it's the friers
So, stick by his side
I know his dude's ballin but yea thats nice
And they gone keep callin and tryin
But you stay right girl
But when you get on he leave yo ass for a white girl

In short: It's interesting.

At the beginning of this Mondays show Jian said this was the last week for it but gave no hint as why. Jully had nominated the song Killing me Softly - Roberta Flack a great track for sure and when Jian asked what the song meant to her she said it's about dic, not just any dic but good dic , then a stunned silence from the panel and then a bit of nervous laughter from the panelists and they moved on . Quite humourous for sure but you know they must have got mega complaints about her.

I dig Kanye too, Gold digger is a catchy tune. Like most 'pop' songs this song (for me at least) acts as a way point in my brain. 10 or 15 years from now, I'll hear Gold digger and I'll remember the first time I heard the song, probably be reminded of NOLA and West's comments about Bush (and Mike Myers trying to look invisible)

I don't limit my listening to a single genre so I find it refreshing to see a hip hop artist who has a positive, sometimes political message. He is really breaking the mold of Hip hop artists who wear the gangsta hat.

I hope Kayne sticks around for a while.
