Hey gang.

Have any of you been getting weird emails at work or on your personal accounts?

We got a weird one at the office. I don't really want to say what it said, but, it wasn't addressed to us, I don't know how we got it. It's being investigated.

Anyone been getting stuff like this?

My bizarre spam tends to arrive nightly. But the only 11 Sept-related stuff I've got has been opportunistic sentimentality.

It had a message in pretty cryptic language. At the top, the word: Thafath. Then it has an intro talking of the "Stranger walked on the beach..." Talks of the powder blowing across the water to drive the darkness out. Says it will all end on Oct 31st. It had attachments too, saying Bush planned the attack with "other Jews". It wasn't spam.

Yeah, I've heard about that e-mail. Impossible to say if it's a hoax or not, though I'm sure the FBI is trying to track the source. It could be one of the reasons the FBI released an alert yesterday: http://www.nationalpost.com/home/story.html?f=/stories/20011030/761219.html

You guys do know there are people out there who are writing this stuff just to get people worked-up. I wouldn't worry to much.

Yeah, I know. It's working a little unfortunately.

It's sent from a hotmail account. Not like that really means anything, but, ususally the computers thumbprint shows up somewhere in the transaction when the account is set up.

I'm trying to ignore it.

I don't want to draw this out cause it sounds like Trinitty had a lame experience.

But I got an email (from a reliable source) with these instructions, which is not so much distressing as erie:

1. Open Microsoft Word
2. Type "Q33 NY" - this was the flight number of one of the planes that crashed into the WTC
3. Select this text and change the font size into 26 or 30 or so
4. Now change the font to "wingdings"

Yeah, I got that one too.

It's a hoax. VERY CREEPY, but still a hoax. The letters and numbers aren't relevant to the flight numbers.

The "script" I got is so weird. The writer even says that "Saudi millionare" bin Laden is "a Jew" and was in on the conspiracy, blah, blah.

Anyone else get this message?

No I haven't gotten anything like that (but then I never get spam anyhow - the spam fairies seem to have not found my email address thank goodness).

But I did read that article in the Post today that Mediaboy is talking about (incidentally, what a rip off the post was today - they've really pared it down, haven't they?) and my first thought was - hmm. They have intelligence that there is going to be a terrorist attack sometime this week. But they don't know where or exactly when. Okay, something's fishy there. How can they have gained intelligence that something is going to happen and consider it "credible" (their words), but not have any idea of the time and place? It leads me to think that either they know more than they're saying, or it's bullshit, and they're just trying to score political points by scaring everyone into vigilance on their neighbours.

If they know more than they're saying (e.g. the place or time), then they could very possibly be endangering people by not letting them know. If they're bullshitting in order to get people onside with their new big brother tactics of criminalizing dissent and valuing conformity above all, then what is this "liberty" they're supposedly trying to defend in this "war"?

I got that one (Q33NY) just after the attacks on 9-11 and mentioned it here. Afterward I did a little looking for what was associated with that and found that is was a bus route.
So it there are wingdings or webdings that come up as a bus for the letter Q I hope someone will let me know asap.

They monitor patterns of communication between suspects. The suspects are not saying "at time X, place Y, we do Z". They are saying stuff like (to quote a transcript from a mafia trial where a friend was a translator) "when do we blow out the candle?" Only I bet they are cleverer than Don Bonerone there. If there is an unusual pattern of activity, or perhaps NO activity, or who knows what, this will spike on their monitoring software. Of course they are also listening to individual suspects, and if there is a change in the types of things being said, they will make inferences.

I sure hope it's not in Toronto. Just being selfish.

BTW - the Rage Against the Machine discussion board was shut down temporarily due to pressure from the FBI about anti-American content. Seems to be back up now, though.
