There's a Thurber Prize? Who knew???

quote:
[Jon] Stewart, David Javerbaum and Ben Karlin won the 2005 Thurber Prize for American Humor for their book, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction. The runners-up were Andy Borowitz for The Borowitz Report: The Big Book of Shockers and Firoozeh Dumas for Funny in Farsi: A Memoir of Growing up Iranian in America.

The award is named for James Thurber, an author, humorist and New Yorker magazine cartoonist who delighted readers for decades with his sharp wit and literary flair before his death in 1961.

Stewart is the host of Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, which has earned seven Emmys and a George Foster Peabody Award.

The Thurber Prize, started in 1996, is considered the top award for humour writing in the United States.

I saw that headline last night, together with another that said "Stewart's Show Cancelled" and thought "Oh the irony!" Fortunately it is Martha Stewart's show that is getting the axe.

It's Martha's Apprentice show that's being cancelled -- not her syndicated daytime show.

Kudos for Jon Stewart. I almost never miss the Daily Show.

At the risk of being a bit off topic, what happened to that hilarious Canadian comic who used to be on the show? I believe her name was Sandra Bee. I haven't seen her doing any of her "20/20 style exposes" on the Daily Show for at least a year. Is she back on the stand-up comedy circuit?

That's Samantha Bee. She's on maternity leave.

Samantha Bee rules!

I'll always remember her hard-hitting expose of HuFu, the human-flesh flavored tofu.

/complete tread drift... does anyone remember that episode of the X-Files "Hollywood A.D." were the "zombies" complained because the parts they were supposed to bite off were made of meat?

"Tofurkey, not turkey... most of the zombies are vegetarians." That line just cracks me up. Every time./end drift I hope.
Does anyone else remember that TV show based on Thurber's works? It starred William Windom, I think, and was on late '60s/early '70s. It was called, iirc, "My Life... and Welcome to it". It was very funny.

It was actually called "My World, And Welcome To It" I loved the show, and it got me reading Thurber.

Years later, I met William Windom when he brought his one-man show(as Thurber)to my college. He was glad to talk to us, but as soon as I mentioned the series, he dismissed the show as "watered-down Thurber". I tried to tell that that may have been, but that it got me to try the hard stuff, but he'd hear none of it(he was angry at the memory of the show, not at me personally). Still, it was good to meet the guy.

I stand corrected; she had a brief segment with her husband (Jason Jones) on last night's show.

CCO, I caught Sam Bee on last night's show too. I can't wait to see her back regularly, doing her trademark, arched eyebrow, "you're either a complete moron or you've got be kidding me" look.
