The history of biology has been negligent in acknowledging the full range of behaviour within a species, and particularly blind to lesbians. For eons, "Nature" and "The Natural" have been equated with retro-hetero mumbo-jumbo. But no longer! There is a whole world of lesbianism waiting to be studied and enjoyed!

Spend some time in their hiking shoes -- meet the Lesbian Rangers on rabble:

Out and about, indeed.

I hope our intrepid Rangers will soon be able to observe the elusive Northern Bonobo in her native habitat. Joyful, even exhibitionist beast in warmer climes, but in Canada, extremely shy and reclusive, for some reason.

Are the Rangers are able to hand out citations for the poor behaviour they witness?

Thank you for your questions and comments. Keep em comin'. The Lesbian Rangers will be making their first foray into babble later this afternoon to answer your call. Sneak preview: Yes, there are citations (tickets for violations, really) -- and fines -- so it's best to keep abreast of standards of proper comportment.

I'm glad they chose the name Rangers, rather than Wardens, like in the national parks. "Wardens" sounds a bit prison-like (although, considering those old "women behind bars" movies... ah, ahem). "Rangers" sounds much more adventurous.

Dear Junior Rangers,

Thank you for your empassioned interest in the Force! Indeed, the Rangers are sometimes required to issue tickets when we feel that the lesbian wilds are in jeaprody. Common offenses include "inappropriate heterosexual display" and "flirtation without intent" (sadly a common lesbian misdemeanor). Miscreants are required to remit a fine, but at the moment we do not enforce violations "heat", as one youthful woman queeried. Undoubtedly, a blazing campfire is heat-producing and, when combined with a convivial weenie-roast, it does encourage lesbian commraderie. However we do not recomment "packing heat" under any circumstances, as your pants and undies may get burned.

As for our titular designation, we are called "Rangers" and not "Wardens" because of our far-"ranging" pecadilldos and deep-seated desire to fully explore each and every lesbian species. As free-range Rangers, we go wherever there is need, spurned on by unbridled scientific curiosity. Wardens, in contrast, are so named because they ward-off undesireable elements. We, the Rangers of Lesbian National Parks and Services, warmly embrace the undesirables of the dominant culture, and seek to get to know them better.

Range on, ye rabble-rousers!

Sincerely,

Ranger Lorri Millan

Impassioned concern often kept us awake long into the night. Warm in our camprolls, serenaded by the haunting call of the loon and the lonely, grey she-wolf, we were plagued by basic questions of species survival. Surely something must be done. But what? If only the fragile lesbian ecosystem was given the attention required to encourage proliferation! If only a force of trained professionals could turn its vigilant gaze on the plight of the lesbian wilds! And if only, in doing so, these do-gooders could inspire tidiness and good grooming amongst their followers!

These thoughts fermented in our minds, like a yeast culture growing into feverish bloom. By the spring of 1997, it was an itch that demanded scratching!

Seems to me there was a report released by researchers not too long ago on "gay" activity in the animal world.

Seems dolphins played a significant part in it. I've never been able to say the word "blowhole" without pausing for a microsecond since.

ANYWAY,

Bonobos exhibit gay/lesbian activity, or at least activity we label "gay/lesbian". Bonobos, being the most evolved primate on the planet, probably just call it "fun". Sensible creatures.

The report has inspired me. I'm off to write a screen play for a T.V. series: "Walker, Texas Lesbian Ranger."

Dear Junior Rangers, or Rangettes if indeed that is what you prefer,

There is room for a vast diversity of lesbian wildlife: animal, vegetable, butch, femme, and those among us (including several species of Bass and all Toads) who can or do (as a matter of their natural life cycle) gender transition.

For those of you who are eager beavers, we at LNPS provide a Junior ranger starter kit which includes the pocket-sized Handbook of the Junior Lesbian Ranger, full-colour embroidered Junior Ranger patch, and grey with green insignia Eager Beaver T-shirt (in sizes XS, S, M, L, and XL) for $40 plus $2.80 GSt plus $5 shipping. Please write in to headquaters at [email protected] or send you cheque (made out to Finger in The Dyke Productions) to 485 Wardlaw Ave., Winnipeg R3L 0L9. Don't forget to tell us your T-shirt size!

Of course this purchase is not necessary to launch you on a career in lesbianism. Above all, a true Junior Lesbian ranger needs practice, practice, practice! Alone or with friends, remember to maintain a sunny smile and erect posture. You are well on your way to becoming a JLR, and we welcome you to the Force!

Sincerely yours,

Ranger Lorri Millan

P.S. In answer to the question about spanking, one need only look to the beaver who slaps her tail against the water to signal danger. Clearly there is cross-species precident for this prediliction and its conflation of pleasure and risk. We do not grant citations to inveterate spankers, however we respect them as a valued part of any ecosystem.

Can't wait for an update from the Eager Beavers. Ranger Millan must be having a whooping good adventure out there in the Lesbian Wilds. Which one is Ranger Millan on the cover of the book. They're both hotties.
