Atanarjuat, the first feature-length film filmed in Inuktitut and starring Inuit actors, opened this weekend across Canada.

Click me for the press release from CBC North!
Or the official website

What's very exciting about this whole thing is that the film has already won loads of awards... let's hope it does well at the box office too, so there will be more like it.

Saw it last night and the theatre was packed. I enjoyed it immensely.

Sure, "Atanarjuat opens in theatres across Canada." Unless you live Saint John, NB. I've read lots about it and really want to see it. It burns me that I'm unable to. I'll have to either drive to another city or even province to see it or wait until it comes out on video in the Foreign Film section at Blockbuster.

Practically everything at Blockbuster should be classified a foreign film.

At Rogers Video in Vancouver I used to find Quebecois movies, and other Canadian movies in French, in the foreign-film section. I'd argue with them, but they said "people get upset when they get home only to find the movie's subtitled."

When I asked them why they worried about the opinions of people who couldn't read "in French, with English subtitles" clearly written on the front of the box, they had no answer.

I thought Atanarjuat was great, by the way, as did (apparently) the dozen or so others in the theatre last night. It's near the end of its run here in Calgary.

I'm seriously thinking of starting a "non-Hollywood movie" night with a few of the women I hang out with in my building. Or even a Canadian movie night. I hardly ever see anything but Hollywood schlock.

There's not much out of Hollywood that I care for at all. I think the general quality's seriously declined since the mid-seventies, and the Blockbuster Boys -- Lucas, Spielberg et al -- have to take much of the blame.

I'll cheerfully admit to some snobbery on this one. But then, I'm going to see Spiderman, regardless.
