Halberstam was a good writer. I came to him from the collected letters of Hunter S Thompson. He introduced the second volume of letters, and features in many letters in both books.

His last SI article was pure Halberstam.

Cross genre journalists like him are slowly all disappearing.

In The Best and the Brightest Halberstam showed how the American Democrats, thinking they knew what was best, encountered a disaster that almost destroyed the American army in Vietnam. Now we are seeing how the American Republicans are losing another war and destroying the rebuilt American army once again using a similar philosophy. I wonder if such hubris is endemic to all American politicians?
