Reading a thread or two and thinking about Cindy Sheehan, Joyce Milgaard and other moms I thought I'd share an e mail from my mom today:
quote:
mom: Evan ,next door, bought a big plant for his Mom and hid it behind their house :
this morning he found the deer had eaten it!
Yesterday, we saw a newborn fawn on our driveway
wobbling around on shaky legs.

My mom still signs her e mails "mom". sniff.

I enjoyed both Mother's Day and my own birthday today. You could say I had double the fun.

My son -- he's 11 -- gave me the card he made in school. Its theme was "10 things about my Mom."

I won't do all 10 but here are three:

Elle est en très bonne cuisinière!!

Elle est la éditeur de rabble!

Elle aime les communists!

I wonder what his teachers will think the next time I'm in the classroom. Perhaps I should bring a casserole.

Happy birthday, Sharon! I didn't even know. Glad I didn't miss it completely.

I had a nice Mother's Day. My little one couldn't wait to give me his gift, so he gave it to me yesterday. It's a Glade scented candle which he picked out all by himself. For a couple of previous gift-giving occasions, he gave me "Garnier" shampoo (because he'd seen the ads for the "long and strong" formula and thought it must be pretty fantastic and that I'd love it since all those nice women on tv seem to love it), and a black, compact umbrella another time because he thought I could use it while waiting for the bus. And homemade cards and pictures galore. So awesome. I love gifts like that - homemade, or totally innocent and cute and thoughtful logic for picking them out.

This year, with the card he and his dad made for me on the computer, he gave me a plasticine stegosaurus (which was surprisingly good and recognizable) that he made at school for me. I have the best kid on the planet, I swear.

I gave my mom an azalea plant with gorgeous purple blooms, and my stepmother a hanging basket full of pink, white and purple petunias. (My son picked out the hanging basket.) Flowers are so cliche and yet so perfect, really. I didn't make my mother anything out of plasticine, unfortunately.

Thanks, Michelle. I forgot to mention the third thing I celebrated today: It's three years to the day that I became editor of rabble.ca. How time flies!

One of the coolest things I got from the wild girls was a little booklet B's teacher had her make up with a sort of "finish the sentence" structure to it. On one of the pages was "The best gift I can give my mom is..." and B wrote "Me".

Not flowers, or things, just "Me". It made me think, wow. I must be doing something right if she knows I value her, and that she values herself that highly.
