Doug Gilmour announces his retirement

quote:
After 20 NHL seasons, veteran forward Doug Gilmour is calling it a career.

The 40-year-old native of Kingston, Ont., made the announcement Monday at a news conference at a Toronto restaurant.

Kirk Muller retired a few weeks ago too, didn't he?

Don Cherry's going to run out of Kingston boys to praise if this trend continues.

As a Habs fan, I remember watching Doug in the 93 series against LA and praying the Kings won. He was a powerhouse, and almost single-handedly got the Leafs to the finals. I was thrilled when Montreal picked him up a couple years ago for the playoff run, and thought he was great against Boston in the first round paired with Petrov. It's a shame last year's return got cut so short.

Ah yes, the year Gretz clipped Gilmour with a pretty blatant high stick that, had in happened to anyone else at anyother time, would have been a clear cut penalty. Instead, that play directly led to Gretzky setting up the goal that moved the Kings past the Leafs. I remember being outraged at that back then, as I had high hope sof seeing a Leafs/Habs final (something that can't happen now). Though the fact the Habs went on to take the Cup was some comfort...

Exactly. My poor television heard some choice words that night, let me tell you.

Gilmour was one of those players who could take a team by the scruff of the neck and lift them to a new level.

Those Leaf years were Gilmour at his best this way.

I do remember further back, when the Leafs eliminated ST. Louis from the playoffs once. Dan Doust of the Leafs has spent the series effectively shadowing and negating Gilmour. Instead of the customery hand shake though, Gilmour chased Daoust all over the ice.

I always wondered if Daoust had mentioned something about babysitting?

Anyway, we can thank Gilmour for some pretty entertaining hockey over those 20 years.

I see the Leafs have signed Neiwendyk from the Devils today.

Not what the team needs......

Marchment was a step [insert kneeing joke here] in the right direction.

Big ruthless defencemen. They need a couple more of them.

Call me old fashioned, but I could do without Marchment in a Leaf uniform. Not that every Leaf has at all times exemplified sportsmanship; but this guy really takes the cake.

What the team needs is a spark plug, a Wendle Clark or Doug Gilmour. These guys either have to be developed or traded for before they are in the twilight of their careers.

Yes, they need more real hockey players and fewer thugs on skates. There's little enough reason to respect the Leafs, they could at least
try to hire some talented guys.

When are Leaf fans, TSN, and the Globe going to realise that the Leafs are only one of 30 NHL (and one of six Canadian) team.

if vancouver gets bought up by roman abromovitch, he's spent money hand-over-fist at chelsea (english football), like 10 million per player for 8 key players over the summer break. every few days, BOOM, they'd buy an internationally-known name.
