Just heard that this week marks the anniversary of Billy Holiday's recording of "Strange Fruit", written by Abel (?) Meeropol, a Jewish communist schoolteacher from New York City, outraged at a photo of a group lynching of Black men in the US South. This song still sends chills up the spine.

STRANGE FRUIT - words & music - Lewis Allen (Meeropol) 1939

Recorded 20th April 1939

The Lyrics:

Southern trees bear a strange fruit

Blood on the leaves and blood at the root

Black bodies swingin' in the southern breeze

Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant south

The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth

Scent of magnolia, sweet and fresh

Then the sudden smell of burnin' flesh

Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck

For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck

For the sun to rot, for the tree to drop

Here is a strange and bitter crop

BTW. Abel Meeropol was also the adopted father of the Ethel and Julius Rosenberg's two sons who were orphaned after their parents were framed and executed by the U.S. government.
