Greetings fellow babblers,

As you may have heard, the legendary ElMocambo concert hall may soon be just a memory. The new landlord, who on Sept. 16 purchased the building where the El Mocambo is located, plans to operate a "dance studio". The landlord's dance studio needs a new space because it recently went bankrupt and lost it lease at its current location.

Many associate the El Mocambo with the legendary Rock and Roll bands that played there in the past. Names like The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Alex Chilton come to mind. Some will remember that it's the place where Maggie Trudeau hung out with Mick Jagger. For the past 40 years the El Mocambo has been a vibrant internationally renowned Rock and Roll landmark right here in Toronto, Canada. This is still true today, and on any given night you can still find great live music there. All that will be lost as of November 4th, when the new landlord takes control. That is unless we can convince the new landlord that he's making a HUGE mistake.

There are many ways you can help. Please go to www.elmocambo.com for more information, and to get in touch with the campaign team. We don't have much time, so please let others know. With enough public pressure, the landlord will realize what a mess he has gotten himself into. With no legal means to get him out, our only hope is that he will concede to a massive public outcry. Your voice is needed.

Long Live Rock and Roll!
Phil

At least a dance studio is a great improvement on a Starbucks, which is what a club I used to go to turned into.

Oh... the Elmo! I remember going to shows there when I was younger, and even seeing friends' bands play there.
I actually walked by the Elmo today, and although I've come to accept the fact that its being turned into a dance studio as well as a help centre for the homeless (which is why I'm accepting it) ... but it just doesn't look like a place that can be turned into anything other than what it already is. It's been there for years!
I'm gonna miss it. And I'm gonna miss it's bright palm tree sign too!

Well, the Elmo is saved...sort of. The whole dance studio thing is still going ahead but the Elmo management are going to re-open at some other location.

How about Save Teds, as according to that
NOW article, they were weasled out of their
space by the promoter of the former ElMo.
<P>
I hope the promoter has a good excuse for
why they screwed Teds, or it would be interesting to see what sort of local opposition the neighbours have to that space getting a new liquor license.

I really liked going to Ted's. I wonder what will happen to wavelength. Will the elmo take that over as well?
