To Whom It May Concern,

I was delighted to hear through the QDF newsletter that the job as General Manager for the St-Ambroise Fringe™ is finally up for grabs:

MainLine Theatre, producer of the St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival and other shows, is looking for a new General Manager. Experience in not-for-profit management, public relations, grant writing, and French/English language skills are among the multi-tasking talents required for this full-time position. $25K annual salary with six weeks vacation. If interested, send your C.V. and a cover letter explaining why you love the Fringe to: Search Committee, MainLine Theatre, C.P. 42103, Succ. Jeanne-Mance, Montreal, Quebec H2W 2T3, or phone 514-849-3378 for more information.

Patrick Goddard, as the previous GM, demonstrated incompetence, corrupt accounting, fraud against artists, and poor media skills, which resulted in the alienation of local artists and heavy brand damage on the trademarked “Fringe”. Back in June 2001 the integrity of the Fringe™ was not in question: the first show in global Fringe™ history was booted by a corporate sponsor, artists were defrauded in bulk with hidden fees, and the Optative Theatrical Laboratories was scammed out of several thousand dollars by Patrick Goddard, who refused to pay the company its ticket sales or a refund. This was a co-opted corporate festival at its best, and Patrick Goddard was the CEO of the hour! Those are big shoes to fill. Unfortunately, over the years the Fringe™ has fallen into bad standing among corporate circles: previously reliable corporate sponsors such as Can-West Global, 99.9 THE BUZZ, and MAC Cosmetics have jumped ship, leaving many to wonder if the Montreal Fringe™ is the real deal.

It is my feeling that with the right person on the job, the Fringe™ can continue screwing over artists from Montreal and abroad, can scam more money, and can get even more corporate sponsorship. Currently the Fringe™ faces intense brand damage from upset artists and the public-at-large; campaigns have been launched to “Reclaim the Fringe” and an “infringement festival” is being planned this June. This all equates to reduced overall profits. If this problem is not addressed now, our corporate festival could be at risk in its entirety. Why do I love the Fringe™? Because it offers aspiring capitalists a wonderful opportunity to rake in tons of free money off the backs of others, while masquerading as a quaint and original artists’ festival of the people. It is corporate co-opting at its finest!

Please find enclosed my CV, along with various letters of reference and media reportage on my work as a well-rounded corporate theatre artist and administraitor. I have worked extensively in corporate entertainment environments, and made theatrical innovations at various places, including Vardon plc’s London Dungeon in the United Kingdom. If hired, I will continue to find ways to rip off artists, deceive the public, all the while gathering more corporate sponsors. Increased financial growth will equate to greater financing for MainLine Producer Jeremy Henchman’s overseas holidays and illicit habits, not to mention the vast sums of money I intend to launder and place in secret bank accounts in Switzerland and the Bahamas.

Please feel free to call me any time at (514) 842-1467 to arrange an interview or to discuss the job opportunity further. Thank you for your consideration; it is truly an exciting opportunity.

Sincerely,

Donovan King
