Great U.S. coloratura soprano, died after suffering from lung cancer, age 78.

I watched her sing Lucia (di Lammermoor) at Covent Garden in 1970 - standing room ticket (cheap) - sets by Franco Zeffirelli.

Thank you for enriching my life.

This is a great loss.

Beverly Sills was the person who introduced millions, perhaps tens of millions, of Americans to the world of opera, making it understandable and accessible without compromising her artistic integrity or reducing the whole thing to pablum.

Her presence on television was wise and witty.
She struck me as the aunt you'd want to have to show you around the cultural world of New York.

Addio, "Bubbles". You'll be missed.

Here she was with Danny Kaye, long ago, doing what Ken Burch said - popularizing:

And here, sound track only, is (IMHO) one of the most beautiful love duets ever, from Lucia di Lammermoor:

Spargi un'amara lagrima su questo pegno allor!

Addio.
