Michael Geist, perhaps Canada's top intellectual property law blogger, has posted on the defection of a number of Canadian indie music labels from the hardline Canadian Recording Music Association (CRIA) over the Association's hardline stance on copyright issues and its attacks against music file sharers.

Geist has an interesting follow-up in his regular LawBytes newspaper column. In this week's text, he uses the CRIA story to discuss Canada's growing cultural deficit.

"Virtually the entire deficit stems from copyright royalties and broadcasting fees."
