Baby Doll (1956) has been called notorious, salacious, revolting, dirty, steamy, lewd, suggestive, morally repellent and provocative. Time Magazine was noted as stating: "Just possibly the dirtiest American-made motion picture that has ever been legally exhibited..." New York's Cardinal Spellman declared the film "evil in concept... certain to exert an immoral and corrupting influence on those who see it." The stark, controversial, black and white Southern drama was so viciously denounced by the Legion of Decency upon its release with a "C" (or condemned) rating that many theaters were forced to cancel their showings, but it still did moderately well at the box office despite the uproar. Baby Doll's impact was heightened by its themes: moral decay, lust, sexual repression, seduction, infantile eroticism and the corruption of the human soul.

Just saw this last night. I thought it was hot, but what about its politics, in reagards to women and race?

Thanks Cueball! Now there's another movie I have to watch. I'll let you know what I think once I get to watch it.

I don't remember ever seeing it (Baby Doll). I think the only cinema erotica I've seen more than once would be 1960s "Barbarella" and 1970s "Last Tango In Paris". I might petition TMN.ca (satellite programming) to show "Baby Doll" sometime.

Well one thing it sure is, is a pretty raw look at poverty and culture in the south. A complex movie, and also really more of a comedy than erotica.

Has anyone else ever seen "Barbarella"? I've asked around, no one I know has ever heard of it. I've seen it several times, although not recently. It stars a very young Jane Fonda.

I've seen it. Think of Raquel Welch in ... One Million Years B.C.. A fake background with a hottie in animal skins. Or something. I think there was some sort of "sex ray" but I could be wrong. Maybe I'm getting mixed up with "Flesh Gordon". Damn. I'm old.

P.S. Thanks Cueball. A young, sexy Eli Wallach. Hah! We were all young, once.

I watched Barbarella about a year ago. Fonda looked good. Also the movie was fun.

Now that you have reminded me, I will watch it again soon. I have it on DVD.

I don't recall ever seeing Baby Doll, I will look around for the DVD. There is a speciality rental place near me that has a lot of older stuff.

I've seen Barbarella lots of times. Fun movie in its way, but could have used some real nudity. The French comic strip it was based on was never so coy. Timid erotica is just silly.

I've always wanted to see Baby Doll. I should check the library to see if they have it.

While we're on the subject, let's make a list of erotic movies that don't suck. Not just movies with a steamy scene or two, but ones that are primarily about sex and passion, while still being high quality, as well as genuinely arousing.

The Lover

Henry and June

Last Tango in Paris

What else?

How traditional of you to look for the ring. That went right past me.

I met the guy who starred in Flesh Gordon. At the time he ran the Latte shop on the west side of Comercial Drive, just south of 1st, in Vancouver. He probably still does. The movie posters are all over the walls.

I remember I liked watching "Last Tango in Paris" but couldn't remember what the plot (if any) was about. That young woman was stunning, Maria Schneider I think it was. Haven't ever seen her in a film since. I never had a clue what "Barbarella" was about, but it was fun to watch. Haven't seen either of these films since around 1985.

Last Tango is about getting fucked up the ass. Barbarella is about Jane Fonda's body.

In 1969, at age 11, me and my friends used to ride our bikes to the West End to sneak into all the movies we could. We'd ride down from North Van and .. well .. get away with what we could. Ha ha. Those were. .. as Ian Hunter said, "different times".

Anyway, I managed to sneak into a few films I had no business seeing. Probably rotted my brain. Ha ha!

Sorry lads. Gotta sleep. Cheers.

Actually, I believe him and his brother own the place.

Thanks, cool, not about sex with children at all. Sounds like an intersting movie, might watch it myself (as long as I didn't read too much of the review - some people are never happy
)
