(Inspired, since I have occasional bouts of SDD -- Shame Deficit Disorder -- by Ken Alexander's column in the June Walrus).

Dear Ken Alexander:

Try as you might, you are not going to become Lewis Lapham.

sincerely,

'lance

Dear Lewis Lapham:

Now that you're going to be writing "Editor's Notebook" only a few times a year, I hope you won't be plagiarizing yourself nearly so much.

sincerely (etc., etc.).

Dear Margaret Wente:

Past all his misguided attempts to be Lewis Lapham, Ken Alexander is right, and maybe even overgenerous, when he writes that you're "overconfident on every subject."

Dear Rex Murphy:

Ken Alexander is right to suggest that your vocabulary makes for a refreshing contrast to your peers, but wrong to suggest that it correlates with better content.

Dear Leah McLaren:

Your columns, compared to those of most of your peers, are not nearly so vacuous as I used to think.

(Continue to taste).

Dear Barbara Amiel,

Shutup.

Yours,
siren

(I'll go read the column and try to figure out what Alexander means by "one sentence".)

Just to clarify, it wasn't Alexander who was suggesting these one-sentence letters. He was just writing about columnists in general (in the context of the new content-free throwaway "news" sheets, blahbity blah. Not that I have any time for those either, but complaining about their vacuity is kind of pushing on an open door, I'd have said).
