Quite right, too. Shit is a far more useful substance than gold. Ever try to grow crops in a field of gold?

Well, "virtually nothing" if you discount the cost of the cattle themselves, land, fuel, electricity, machinery & maintenance, feed, supplements, keeping the farm family clothed and fed...

For that matter, I wonder if anyone's ever calculated the value of manure on this basis. Potentially a very interesting exercise, that.

Fang was working on an invention that would have eliminated (you should excuse the expression) the need for sewers in Toronto. I fear that outhouses were a pre-condition, though. Well: never mind.

Now don't knock outhouses. I grew up using them. It's a great compost system. Of course when the hole gets full you have to move the building over (dig a hole first, of course). And if you do it yourself it's cheap. No need for expensive infrastructure like sewers and treatment plants. It's all done in your back yard (if you have one but even apartment dwellers could have a few lined up in the back.) And at the price shit is fetching these days you could sit back and retire early.
