French mime legend Marcel Marceau died yesterday bringing to an end an era of wonderful physical theatre. His influence certainly outweighs all the mime jokes out there. There are pivotal characters throughout theatre history and he was certainly one of them. Etienne Decroux, Jacques LeCoq, Jean Luis Barrault changed the way we look at physical theatre. I still teach mime to young people in schools who at the age of 12, 16, etc. know his name as synonymous with the the word mime.
