Who would have thought to see a thread on Stan Rogers? Well, I've been thinking about him a lot lately. Mainly, because I've been listening to his fantastic music a lot lately. Well, for those of you who don;t know who he is, hopefully not many; he was a great guy. Most people would assum he's from the eat coast, but hes actually from Hamilton, Ontario. I found this out long after i first heard him, and I'm from Hamilton. He even went to the high school iw ould have gone to if it was not torn down by my age of 10. He seems like someone who can piece together a song and give it the right feeling instantly. His covers of traditonal folk are often deemed the best. He died, sadly enough, at a young age. Among with famous artists like Hendrix and Lennon. What's my point? i don't know, the song is over.

Of course, he never understood Morris dancing, although he did write a Morris tune, which he titled "The Idiot" with no apologies to Morris dancers.

I did a search and found a few old threads...

Babble's Privateers 2002...

Music Hall of Fame campaign; and geist update August 30, 2005;

This thread links to a wonderful meditation on Barrett's Privateers;

Canadian songs and singers.

My understanding of Barret's Privateers is that it was written in a bathroom by Stan when he got jealous of the response the Friend's of Fiddler's Green got from chorus songs.

The bathroom part might be apochryphal but I am pretty sure of the motivation.

The Canadian Acadamy of Recording Arts and Sciences does not yet have its 2006 inductees named on the website; last year The Tragically Hip were inducted; and here is their list of past inductees. So we don't know yet if geist's campaign for Stan Rogers has succeeded.

My grade 7/8 teacher introduced the entire class to Stan Roger's music (He would start singing Northwest Passage randomly in class and played some songs) I've been a fan of his ever since.

Rise again, rise again ...

Wonderful how old babble threads do that, ain't it?

Like the Mary Ellen Carter,
Rise again.
