Just saw it last night, and the acting was excellent (Mirandra Richardson struck me far more than Ralph Fienne's performance). Worth seeing, definately, and it has that classic Croenenberg capacity to keep you off balance throughout, but as the person I saw it with commented afterwards, it stuck us how much creepier this film would have been had Croenenberg made it 15 years ago.

There's one scene with an eel that really, we were both just waiting for the family to bite in, dribbling chunks down their chin nonchalantly as they eat, with the boy looking on in horror - but it didn't happen. I wonder - did he not do that because we all expected it, because he didn't feel it was necessary for the scene, or has he taken a turn away from using gore and such innapropriateness to shock? Is he trying to reach a more mainstream audience? Am I overanalyzing this?

Anyhoo, I think that even people who aren't Croenenberg fans will like this one - its beautifully done, and not violent or gory; just deliciously startling at times. I hope it gets a wider release.

agreed, very well done I applaud move away from the ultra sensationalism of his previous films (not that there was anything wrong with that) but his skill is even more apparent when you see that he has the ability to keep you freaked out without benefit of kinky fetishes with sexy legless people or aliens shooting out of the abdomens of unsuspecting victims.

Yes, he really got down to business and just told a very sad story.

I saw it last night. It wasn't what I expected but I enjoyed it all the same.
