New study shatters Internet 'geek' image

quote:
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- The typical Internet user -- far from being a geek -- shuns television and actively socializes with friends, a study on surfing habits said on Wednesday.

The findings of the first World Internet Project report present an image of the average Netizen that contrasts with the stereotype of the loner "geek" who spends hours of his free time on the Internet and rarely engages with the real world.

Instead, the typical Internet user is an avid reader of books and spends more time engaged in social activities than the non-user, it says. And, television viewing is down among some Internet users by as much as five hours per week compared with Net abstainers, the study added.

I'm not surprised at all. I think Netizens are generally too smart to fall for the whole TV thing.

Ack! That horrible word. "Netizen." I think CNet or someone popularized it 4 years ago. It just grates.

I'm with mandos on this term.

The French use "Internaut," which isn't too bad.

PA, sorry, but your merged words leave me cold.

Netizen doesn't bother me too much, but Internaut is more appropriate, as you're more an explorer than a member of something.

Those other words are horrid.

Internaut! I love it! I'm using that from now on.

Does anyone remember the old BBS days? Back then if you wanted to describe an online acquaintence you didn't like, you'd call them a "luser", combining "loser" with "user". I got a kick out of that.

Internaut IS good! I'll add it to my list of merged words! Netizen is good too, because it suggests not only an explorer, but a member of a vast community (the Net). The important thing about these types of new words is what they can offer us in terms of new perception:

advertorial: good, because it destabilises corporate editorials that are also used to sell products (CanWest does this a lot).

infotainment: good, because it destabilizes the notion of information by fusing it with "entertainment" (again, CanWest is infamous for it - especially in "arts" sections!)

metrosexual: mixed - on one hand it is good by encouraging men to question the stereotypes associated with patriarchy; bad in that it encourages extra consmption for men (such as make up, manicures, the wearing of g-strings that pop up over low-cut jeans, and other traditionally "female" expenditures).

Any other goodies out there? Especially regarding the Net?
