One of the top news stories in Québec media in this slow summer season is the death of French film star Marie Trintignant, after a violent dispute with her rock star boyfriend, who was the lead singer with Noir Désir. This band was highly political, involved in anti-racist, anti-fascist and global justice movements. Lots of folks phoning in to chat shows and radio voice boxes here about this story, and lots of background on Radio-Canada and community radio stations. Don't imagine there is much echo in English Canada, although a short article did make the pages of the Globe and Mail.

The Guardian has more extensive coverage, as does BBC. http://www.guardian.co.uk/france/story/0,11882,1010961,00.html Needless to say, francophone babblers can find lots more at www.lemonde.fr and www.liberation.fr .

I was amazed by this story too. I knew nothing of Marie before today (or her mother, either, who sounds most interesting), but I certainly remember her father -- great actor, most subtle, often very funny.

Very sad.

Pity, the actress and singer involved in this tragic story of conjugal violence were nothing like the rather trashy Tommy and Pamela couple.

It sounds like alcohol, doesn't it?

Furniture thrown around, eg, and then in the morning he was drunk enough to be poisoned -- which, I assume, would be when he took the drugs, trying to commit suicide.

God, I feel sorry for them both -- well, them all.

Granted, the French actress was a real actress, and not a silicone-injected beach accoutrement. But the husband was a rock star -- was he somehow more *soulful* because he is French? He sounds like a grade "A" asshole who deserves to go to prison for the rest of his natural life.

Oh, he was definitely a violent shithead, who deserves a long prison term (but not life, nobody gets life for manslaughter). And yes, skdadl, large amounts of alcohol and other substances were involved.

But Noir Désir was a progressive band with intelligent lyrics and a very strong involvement in progressive causes, very well known in left circles here. Nothing like Tommy Lee. And what does the group's nationality have to do with anything?

This story is shocking mainly because it shows that extreme congugal violence can arise in all social milieux. People are very worked up about the story here.

The nationality of this wife-killer has nothing to do with anything, I agree. I've become jaded with rock stars who claim to be progressive and then wreak mayhem in their private lives. John Lennon said "give peace a chance" and beat up on Yoko. Jackson Browne beat Darryl Hannah. And no matter how publically progressive this French rock star was, he practiced the most extreme form of misogyny in his private life.
