I was just wondering what everyone thought about the current 'flash mob' craze. It's part of the whole smart mob phenomenom, I guess, but it also seems more random and humourous. Some call it performance art. A mob like this descended on a store down the street from my home last night, so it got me thinking about it.

Any thoughts? Do you think this is the same as other types of internet organizing around anti-gloabl stuff etc? I think it is a little different. The mobs are not necessarily connected to any particular event, so they could become a better, more random way to disrupt capital.

I thought this was going to be about groups of people who expose their naughty bits in public.

bruce sterling was writing about something similiar in his novel, "distraction," unpredictable internet-linked groups of people thoroughly destroying banks. i was thinking a lot about this with recent anti-capitalist protests against bechtel in san fran.

There's a flash mob project in Toronto. Check out this link for the Yahoo Group. I assume that's where people will receive instructions.

The Toronto Star has a feature on Flash Mobs right now...

I think it's better when we don't involve politics in it. It's not a protest. It's just having fun.
