Enya sings in a tongue from a 'distant planet'

quote:
Enya, the reclusive Irish artist, has invented a new language after deciding that English was too “obtrusive” for her lyrics.

The Dalkey-based singer also rejected Gaelic and Latin, both of which she used on previous records. So a quarter of the songs on Amarantine, her new album, are in a tongue called Loxian, which she devised with her lyricist Roma Ryan.

Ryan didn’t simply make up words to match the sounds being made by Enya, but developed a new alphabet of arrows, lines and curves as well as a cultural and historical back-story about the race who speak it.

Okay, yeah, creative - but definitely a bit loopy.

I'm in favour of invented languages. It sounds like a neat idea.

Shame on her for inventing a language when other languages are dieing out like flys. There is a 3rd irish language (sometimes called gammon, I think) that she could have used.
And language is all the more beautiful from being invented by thousands of people.

Didn't The Lord of the Rings, with its invented tongues, grow out of Tolkien's work as a linguist?

Kind of.

But none of the tongues are actually useable.

Whereas Klingon is!

As usual, Enya is merely doing what Liz from the Cocteau Twins already did twenty years previously. And, infinitely better, I may add.

Inventing a new language for your lyrics is a hell of a lot easier than writing lyrics in an existing language.

You know, had she done her album in Klingon, it might possibly go platinum as trekkies would buy it in bulk!

Buying more than one copy would be illogical. We trekkies are logical. (Except for those of us who have no Vulcan blood, a second-rate group.)

I always thought the Onion nailed it good with "Klingon Speakers Now Outnumber Navajo Speakers". Always nice to see fake TV "cultures" doing so well for themselves at a time when many actual cultures are in decline.

They said it, but they didn't invent it. The Ramones were way too cool for such pretentious bullshit.

quote:
"The 'Gabba Gabba Hey We Accept You One Of Us' thing on the song, Pinhead," explains Tommy Ramone, "we picked up from this silent (sic) thirties' movie called FREAKS by this guy, Tod Browning. When the freaks admitted someone new into their ranks they carried signs (sic) saying 'Gabba Gabba Hey, we accept you.'

Well, it's not Enya's job to protect dying languages. She has every right to try to start her own.

I'd just like our current language to have a second person plural that didn't make me sound like a Texan (y'all).

We have some amazing languages here on the West Coast - some of them are dying off, but some are being revived by the heroic efforts of a few really interesting people.
