It wasn't. It was a television adaptation of one of Montgomery's lesser-known (and much darker) works. It wasn't meant to be Anne of Green Gables, but that's what people expected it to be.

Remakes that didn't work? Can somebody find me one that DID?

Despite the fact it's a visual wonder, Tim Burton's remake of The Planet of the Apes was not good.

Yeah; IIRC, didn't that version have the humans speaking or something? I thought they weren't supposed to be able to; that was a key point!
