... that someone actually complained to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council about "Highway Girl"

Imagine that.

I find that offensive too. But I wouldn't ask for it to be banned.

How did you happen to come across such a tidbit clockwork? Are you on their mailing list or something?

I read DrC's little post in the Jews for Jesus thread about "I'm the Messiah" and I was trying to remember the lyrics (although I was trying to remember the line before it as welll, "I read too much. I thought we should kill ourselves. She doesn’t read a thing. She believed me. Are you really the messiah? Yes I am." Teehee.. still brings a giggle fit on). So I hit google looking for the lyrics and that was the first site I clicked.

Anyway, such a classic rant… I never even thought it could be construed as offensive. I imagine the complainer (complaintee?) doesn't listen to the hip all that much.

Oh, and I thought this what a hoot:
quote:
He also told me that it’s the most requested song on their list. I demand as a tax payer (a rather ticked off one right now) that something be done about this.

My tax dollars fund this council and I demand it listen only to me!

Have I missed something with that rant? Was it supposed to be satirical or something? I've never heard the song, but when I read the words written there, I thought it was obnoxious. But then, I hate the Tragically Hip anyhow, I think their music sucks.

Well, if you didn't like it, of course you missed something. I don't think it's really satire as more of a joke. A story. I'm surprised that the complainee was offended by the suicide pact in the song but didn't seemed worried about them being serial killers. Go figure.

I'm not a huge fan of the music. I like all the stand-bys but what I really like are his little rants (I bought two new golf clubs largely because they were called "Orca's", killer whales; I could call my driver Shamu and my 3 wood Bartholomew, my golf bag the killerwhaletank and I can announce I'm a member of the Clean & Scrub Union) and I like Downie's lyrics(I don't know many songs about art critique with references to John Cage).

And you know you can be tried for crimes against Canada for saying you don't like the Hip.
