What? They're just getting around to Rush? Are they 20 years behind or something?

It is the Music Industry Hall of Fame. It doesn't sound like they really focus on musicians much.

it's not that they're getting around to rush ... rush is only the 2nd band to be inducted (after the guess who),

who should be the 3rd band? i vote for the rheostatics.

I'd be tempted to agree, WW -- Rheostatics being my absolutely favourite band -- except that it's plain a band isn't inducted until well past its creative peak. Which I refuse to believe the boys are.

Then again, any thought in which the phrase "creative peak" is in any sort of proximity to the word "Rush" would give me a migraine, likely as not...

They should be, though in truth I've always thought it was stretching a point just a little when Canadians claimed them as a Canadian band. Sure, four of them were Canadian, and they did the odd song about Canada ("Acadian Driftwood"), and featured a Canadian flag in some sequences of "The Last Waltz." But then, their musical formation was mostly American. They'd never have developed that sound without all those years in Southern honkey-tonks and what not.

Perhaps they had a truly North American sensibility, whatever exactly that might be.

no, no, no--you call me young'un for the wrong reasons!! I know full well who the Band is. I was making a joke that comes from Animaniacs, I believe, and is a throwback to the "who's on first?" classic.

Goes somethin' like this:

Do you see the Band?

Who?

No! The Band!!

Who?

The Band!! On stage!

and so on.

That was a great one! I love the Animaniacs!

I think I'm the only Kingstonian who doesn't like the Hip. I don't like their music much. But I share the exact same name as the sister of one of the band members, so I often get phone calls for her! And when people hear my last name, they often ask if I'm related to so-and-so from the Tragically Hip.

The answer, btw, is NO. It's a big coincidence. (Coinky-dink? )

Yeah, but are you FROM Kingston? Because that's important you know. You gotta be a townie for that to have any REAL significance.

I'm a TOWNIE who doesn't like the Hip. Oooooh. Throw the eggs now! Oh wait, you did grow up in Kingston, didn't you? Hee. Okay.

We should form a club.

BTW, what happens when a townie goes to Queen's? Am I now "town" or "gown"?

I had the same town-gown problem. I never did figure it out. What are if you live in Kingston, went to Queen's and now work there?

Other than quite insane, I mean.

I hate Rush. Got a Rush story though. In Tel Aviv there's a pretty wild pub called M.A.S.H. where people from all over the world generally get sloshed before they tear off to one of the all- night clubs or parties that seem to be everywhere in that most hedonistic of cities. The beach isn't far and jam sessions continue until dawn. Ugh, just the thought of it all makes me tired now. Obviously I'm not nineteen anymore. So, for a while I would go to M.A.S.H regularly -- I was on a dart team comprised of myself and these Prussian giants; engineers working on some bridge or something. One early evening things started to really cook there -- HappyHour -- and one of my new friends tried to squeeze into the jet fighter suit left by a british gulf war pilot that was strapped to a cedar post. The helmut was left to dangle like a horses dung-bag. This guy had to be over 6ft6"...and pilots are generally diminutive men...Anybody know Prussians? Anyhow, it was very funny at the time.

I ended up going to get more beer for our table (they sold these enormous "pitchers" -- for 17 NIS) and the bartender tells me he's a huge fan of this band from Canada and he just got this new CD and he's about to put it on and would I like to go out for a "smoke" before he plays the album. The music was meant to be a surpise. So I brought the beer and left my Prussian friends and their feats of strength to smoke some hashish.

Ten minutes later the place was transformed into some unsavoury thrash garden as 2112 played at a volume usually reserved for FBI psych-war operations.

Blech!

I'm not much of a Rush fan. Lord knows I hear enough when the concert speaker crew sets the radio to 103.9, "The Hawk"-- London's Jurassic Rock station.

I am impressed, however, that Rush got the sound they have from just a three piece band.

It's a brand of heavy metal I don't like too much. A little to pretentious for my taste.

In selecting for a music "Hall of Fame" I think longevity should play a big part, as should how much the band effected other musicians.

Personally, I would have inducted April Wine before Rush. I'm not sure either band influenced anyone else, but April Wine has been around longer, and at least isn't pretentious. Just catchy tunes to chew until the flavour is gone, then onto the next one. And if the lyrics are banal, so is most rock, and they don't have the contrived feel of Rush lyrics.

But on the other hand, I'm wearing a watch. And, if you consider it's the Canadian hall of fame, one can't overlook Stompin' Tom Connors.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I only like the odd tune by Stompin' Tom, and I regard them with the fondness I have for other "novelty tunes".

But, one thing Stompin' Tom did was write songs about the actual people and happenings in Canada, something but few other artists even attempted to do.

And if the lyrical quality sounds like a square peg being driven into a round hole, maybe he can be forgiven for his purity of cultural spirit.
