The Laramie Project has been banned in a BC high school:

The cancellation of a dramatic production has left a Surrey, B.C. high school divided.

The controversy centres around a thwarted plan to stage The Laramie Project, a play that recounts events in a Wyoming town that led to the 1998 death of a gay university student.

Matthew Shepard was lured from a bar by two men who beat him, lashed him to a fence and left him to die.

Elgin Park Secondary School drama teacher Stan Engstrom thought the play was just what his high school needed.

"The reason I chose this play was because of an incident that happened in our school three years ago, a homophobic incident," Engstrom told CTV News.

Even if he had to soften some profanity and delete explicit scenes, Strachan hoped he might mount the play and spark a debate on gay rights in the process.

But the Surrey School Board put a stop to Engstrom's plans, saying its depiction of sex, violence and foul language would not be appropriate for the potential audience.

Laramie Project playwright Moises Kauffman thinks that misses the mark, though. Other high schools have staged his play without incident, he told CTV in an interview from New York. Stopping the show, he added, gives students the wrong message.

"It sends a very strong signal to that student community that this subject matter is not only taboo but it's something that should be derided and looked down upon," Kauffman said.

Sorry, "FourteenRivers", but there's a thread on this already -- I think it's in the BC forum. BTW, I noticed you're in Québec, "FourteenRivers" -- would it be presumptious to guess you are from Troix Riviere?

Thanks Hep! Didn't realise it was already being discussed. Actually, I am from south of Montreal.
