I don't know of any fan sites or non-commercial info, but I will agree, Madvillain's album is one of the best hip-hop albums I've heard in quite some time.

Some true 'hiphop heads' on another board I know have said Madvillain was kinda dissapointing, and that MF Doom's 'Special Herbs and Spices' series is the real good stuff. I've got some of that dl'd, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I like Madvillainy quite a bit though, I gotta say, so it will be great if the MF Doom work surpasses it.

Edit: It at least equals it, on a first listen. Some tight work on the King Geedorah (an MF Doom alias) 'Take Me to Your Leader' album. Great beats, great wordplay.

Special Herbs & Spices is just instrumental versions of old MF Doom productions. I don't get why everyone lauds it so heavily. Doom is an engaging producer but his beats are nowhere near on the level of his rhymes, not from the early 90s KMD days to the present.

Likewise though, I think that Madlib is an insanely overrated producer. Not that he isn't good, but he's not breaking the mold.

Madvillain is a scrappy record, but it benefits from two things: some really entertaining loops and samples, and some of the most alert and intricate rapping of Doom's career.

Still, I'd rate Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain above Madvillain on all fronts. It, like Madvillain, is an album of MF Doom (Daniel Dumile) rapping over beats produced for him by others (until recently, quite contrary to his modus operandum), but the beats draw more from the microedit/IDM/glitch pool of talent, as well as having a banger from RJD2 for good measure, and go a lot further in setting an otherworldly stage for Doom's film noir rhapsodies.

p.s. yeah I listen to rap

^ I listen to good music. And rap has some great artists out there And I was mistaken, now that I think about it, it wasn't the Spices series those guys were praising, it was in fact those Vaughn ones, and The King Geedorah which was the only one I've actually had a chance to listen to yet ((hat one was definitely singled out as, the guy in question was pointing out how excellent 'Fazers' is, and he was 100% correct)

I look forward to those Latvian albums now, not so much the spices. But first I'm gonna bump 'Phazers' again.

oh, and 'film noir rhapsodies' is a great description

Madvilliany is ok. I guess I'm getting a bit tired of the mf doom formula. Its much, much better than King Geedorah. The beats and loops on Take Me To Your Leader are much too repetitive and doom is a much better mc than producer, in my opinion. Which is why the first Viktor Vaughn (Doom's persona on "Fancy Clown" off Madviliany) album is brilliant. King Honey is a sick producer.

It was percisely the idm fusion on Vaudeville Villain that got me into hip-hop in general, as it completed my transition for a warp records obsession progressing into Prefuse type glitch-hop. It was really my first dip into the genere and Doom's slurred delivery sealed it.
