"... he scores! Henderson!"

"We're Number One! We're Number One!"

It was 29 years ago yesterday. Mr. Lester had brought his TV to class so we could watch Games 6 and 7, despite snowy reception. But for Game 8, for some reason, reception was beyond snowy, and we couldn't see a thing.

Eventually we heard other classes erupt in cheers, and went home to watch replays on TV. Newspaper stories; newspaper photos; a few weeks later, a briefly famous painting on the cover of Weekend, which I copied, badly, during art period.

And the following year, a brilliant, melancholy book by Jack Ludwig, whose brief brush with fame, years before, involved Saul Bellow and Ludwig's then-wife.

Old memories, unlike old enemies, don't make us feel young.

The NDP (feds) were working up their "corporate welfare bums" campaign. My boss sent me off to shepherd through their instant book.

Two days in Ottawa, copy-editing as the research team wrote. (One of them was sooo cute -- wonder where he is now ...)

On to Montreal, where printers rip manuscript from my hot little hands and rush 'em to the presses. For three days, hole up in extremely strange suburban motel; show up daily in union proof-room, just off intensely union composing room.

Foreman is Scottish; all printers are francophones. Printers torn between hating me for being non-union, maybe for being anglo, and examining my bustle. Tension mounts.

But we all have radios. "Henderson!" same in both languages. Composing room erupts. E-rupts! Hug hug hug -- yummy. Beautiful guys; I am adopted.

(And yes, I know there's a typo in one of the captions. I had to leave before the captions were set.)

Swear to God, I read this as "union-proof room."

But those were different times, and Michael Walker and Tom D'Aquino were probably just crawling out from under their rocks.

[edited to add: I've just remembered. I'd absorbed my dad's distaste for Trudeau, and was a partisan of Bob Stanfield that year. Eight years old.]

I had a party in my apartment that night...and discovered that one does not have to have a heavy security apparatus to create apartheid: all the Canadians were in one room, watching intently, while all the
people born and raised elsewhere--maybe 20--kept away. No mixing occurred until the GOAL, and then the temperature of the festivities was permanently raised by out-of-control hockey mongers.
