Blu-ray is apparently more expensive, but also better quality because it has a lot more room on the disc. HD DVD is apparently cheaper and more widespread.

If it goes in the same direction as the Beta vs. VHS, I'm going to guess that Blu-ray is going to lose the format war.

As for me, it took me years after DVDs came out to get a DVD player. So I'm guessing I'll probably just have my boring old DVD player for years to come. Especially since I also can't be bothered paying to switch to a high definition television.

I agree Michelle. There's not much of a jump here. VHS to DVD was a huge difference -- better picture, no rewinding, better audio, extra features like commentary, menus. Blu-ray and HD DVD just offer better picture quality if you have an HDTV which I don't think I will be able to afford any time soon.

But for those who have switched to HDTV (and I assume all new televisions will be high definition in the future), which format of movie disc do you think will win out?

I'm betting the cheap one, personally, just like it did with VHS/Beta.

Yeah, definitely the cheap one and the one with more available content. Right now, HD-DVD is cheaper than Blu-ray but neither are cheap unless one considers $500 USD for a player to be cheap.

The other factor is the video game systems. Xbox 360 is going to have HD-DVD support and Playstation 3 is going to have Blu-ray support. That could affect the format war. I think it's too early to tell which will be the winner.
