I don't know if this is the right forum for this, but I figured "culture" seems close enough.

Ever noticed how people often use redundant language by saying a category, followed by something that actually belongs to that category? Here's a few examples:

1. "Animals and [insects, fish, birds, etc]". All those things are animals.

2. "Performance and fuel economy". Why is fuel economy so often treated as not being part of the car's performance? Is it because the loogans who look at the performance stats first think that fuel economy is for wimps?

3. "Health care, education, and social programs". Are health care and education not social programs? I guess people don't want to think of themselves as benefitting from social programs, since they think only poor, lazy, and dirty people do that.

Anyone have other examples?

The contructions that drive me mad are redundancies like: "He was fourteen years of age."

What? As opposed to fourteen years in height?

This doesn't fit into the category set down by Mike, but I've come to realize that I really hate redundant expressions like "My fellow classmate" or "my fellow co-worker".
